Changing Our Narrative

LOS ANGELES – Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) will announce the launch of the first Historically Black 4-year medical degree (MD) program to open anywhere in the US since 1981. The new program will be the first and only such program offered through a Historically Black institution west of the Mississippi and will directly impact physician workforce diversity in California and beyond. The event will include the official announcement delivered by CDU’s president at 10 a.m. followed by supporting statements from the University and community members to mark this historic occasion.
The photos below were taken in October of 2021 when California State Assemblyman Mike A. Gipson presented Dr. David M. Carlisle, President of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science a check for $50 Million dollars to assist with the development of the historically Black Medical Degree program.
