Tiger Woods first took the collective sports world by storm in 1997 with his first Master’s win. It made the establishment so mad that Fuzzy Zoeller lamented that the next year’s menu was going to be fried chicken and collard greens. 15 years later many in the sports media would like to declare Tiger’s illustrious career as finished. Really! Darren Clarke has been a professional golfer for quite some time and just won his first major.
Rory McilRoy blew a substantial lead in the Masters but bounced back in the US Open. His performance was one for the ages. He broke several records, including becoming the youngest U.S .Open champion since Bobby Jones. Most in the national media were ready to crown Mcilroy the heir apparent to the throne of Tiger Woods. During Woods’ fall from grace and very public divorce, many wanted to paint Phil Mickelson’s 2010 Masters Victory, as a strike against a sexual deviant who treated his wife terribly.
Selective morality aside, Woods had only engaged in what many powerful men before him had. However the establishment in the media and golf world sold the American public a bit of goods disguised as genuine disdain. This caused Tiger to retreat in what many believe is a hole he could never climb out of. Many have even said that Jack Nicholson’s 18 major’s record is far out of reach. The truth is the Tiger’s mere presence and top 5 finishes are enough to keep the casual and hardcore fan engaged in the game.
Tiger decided to take some time off to fully get healthy but now he’s sporting a goatee. Is he turning more militant? In black barber shops around the country, guys like Tiger are always dismissed by some brothers as a guy who doesn’t understand the plight of the common black man. Of course Tiger’s explanation back in the late 1990’s about his race alienated many black people (Cablasian) who had supported his meteoric rise to fame.
