“You don’t have to be a perfect parent, but you do have to be a real one.” These words couldn’t be any more true, and they resonated with me as I began to reflect on motherhood.
I can’t think about motherhood without acknowledging my mother and all the wonderful “motherly” figures I’ve been blessed to be around both now and growing up – Grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and cousins. Dare I mention the ladies of the church that wouldn’t hesitate to correct my posture or remind me to carry myself as a young lady. Indeed, I carry a little bit of all these mothers with me in some form as I raise my own two children.
My inspiration when it comes to motherhood (and in life!) is my INCREDIBLE mother. There isn’t much I can’t say about my mom and I feel so blessed to have had such a strong, loving, God-fearing woman to call MOM. She’s dedicated her life to caring for her family. She went to every basketball game, attended every school meeting, and simply, made things happen for us. Her dedication to us continues.
The best lessons from my mom come through her example. It isn’t a secret that my mom has had to face many challenges in her life. The latest being complications from breast cancer treatment that resulted in major surgeries on her spine. But one thing that strikes me is that through it all, she keeps her FAITH, and finds a way to just keep living. I can only hope to be the remarkable example to my kids that my mom has been to me.
I don’t have a perfect mom (those don’t exist), but I thank God everyday that I have a real one. One that means so much to SO MANY. One that I can talk to about anything. One who will tell me the truth ALL the time, one who will be there to encourage and support me. One who continues to be an extraordinary example of courage and strength. Words will never be enough to describe how much I love my mom.
Thank you for everything, Mom.
Happy Mother’s Day, I love you.
