Changing Our Narrative

By Lamont Landers

As I arrive at Blair Park at 6 a.m. for my morning workout, the sun has yet to rise, it’s cold and the only ray of light is dimly shining on the basketball court. When I begin working out and feel the cold chill on my body and numbness in my hands, I think to myself, why the hell are you doing this? Is it to please your ego by attempting to remain an athlete or simply to continue to outdo these youngsters on the court?

We all know Father Time is undefeated. What could motivate a 54-year-old man to dedicate himself to training 5 days a week so early in the morning? The truth of the matter is all of the above. The most important reason, however, is the love for my family, body and the desire to do all that I can to live a long and healthy life.

I also love bringing inspiration to older adults and motivating young athletes. You’re never too old to improve yourself and it feels great when someone half your age acknowledges how hard you work or how good you look. Health is the most important thing that all people possess, yet many of us take it for granted. Over the past year, I’ve seen so many individuals neglect their health until it was too late. Luckily I’m surrounded by family and friends who won’t allow me to do that. They keep me motivated to not just stay physically fit but to also see my doctor regularly and eat healthier.

Eating healthier is the most difficult thing lol. Individuals you surround yourself with and family play a major role in motivating you, keeping you humble and staying grounded. When you have people in your life who love and believe in you, the sacrifices and exhaustion you put your body through are worth it.

The physical portion of working out hurts but it’s your mental fortitude that keeps you going. Your body yells at you to stop but your mind pushes you through. I’ve been able to accomplish many things because of my physical ability but nothing would have ever come to fruition without the right support system. It’s important to have people in your life who are willing to tell you things that you don’t want to hear.

“There is a standard that sums up my approach to physical fitness and life. I never understood what it meant as a student at Verbum Dei High School when I had to write it but I live by it now: “Be humble enough to obey, you’ll be giving orders yourself someday.” Lamont Landers

In everything you do, you must have balance and humility. Be honest, consistent and fair in all your endeavors, be it working on your body or in your profession. Practicing this will ultimately guide you to success. There is a standard that sums up my approach to physical fitness and life. I never understood what it meant as a student at Verbum Dei High School when I had to write it but I live by it now: “Be humble enough to obey, you’ll be giving orders yourself someday.” These are the truest words ever spoken. Stay motivated and focused, people, your health and your lives are worth it.
