There are so many great things emerging and evolving at Los Angeles SouthWest College.
We are in a new era at SouthWest College, where there is a sense and aroma in the air filled with purpose, expectation, and dedication. With the S.O.C.T.E. building now complete, along with a spectacular theatre and a new library located on floors 2 through 4 in the Cox building, the excitement at SouthWest College between students, staff, and administration is palpable.
First, there are so many striving students at SouthWest College who work hard to be the best students, leaders, parents, and people they can be. These dedicated students carry themselves in a manner that is infectious and it reflects that no matter how difficult the challenge, they will not back down and will not accept no as the final answer.
Next, you have a nucleus of dedicated professors. Some may even say that our professors are at the pinnacle of their academic careers. SouthWest professors not only know about success and hard work, they understand the struggle of their college students and they relate to the students in a manner that can be difficult to comprehend if one is on the outside peering in.
Connie Bullock, Sandra Lee, Tamura Howard, Darren Cifarelli, Marini Smith, Kristine Wright, Sabrena Turner-Odom, Jeffrey Bohn, and Reggie Morris along with many others have been dedicated and exemplary professors and shining examples to their students of what to never give up looks like and to continue pressing towards your desired goals.
When I reflect on a mentor and champion of students and campus life, I think of Dolores Sheen or “Aunt Dolores,” as she is often referred to on campus. In the spring of 2014, students were not pleased with the overall appearance of our campus. It wasn’t long before “Aunt Dolores” formed a campus club known as the Los Angeles SouthWest Village People to attack the challenge of restoring beauty to our campus. Truly, the Village People have helped bring a change to the SouthWest campus that we are all proud of.
Finally, as I bring my inaugural blog focused on Los Angeles SouthWest College to a close, I do so celebrating the vision and inspiration of our distinguished academic leader, Dr. Linda Rose. Although Dr. Rose has only served in the capacity of president of SouthWest for a year, her impact and imprint has already made a significant contribution to both student and faculty life on our outstanding campus.
Perhaps this is the best time to be a student at Los Angeles SouthWest College. Change is here. I strongly believe that we can achieve our desired educational and life goals without hindrance or limitations.
