No doubt President Barack Obama was the man of the hour at last night’s farewell Speech. Addressing thousands of supporters who gathered at Chicago’s McCormick Place, the 44th commander in chief held the audience rapt with his searing and uplifting speech on the cornerstones of his two-term presidency, the state of democracy, and the pitfalls of racism that threaten to upend our political stability. But as he broke through the talk of politics to thank his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, for unerring support, it was clear who stole the show.  As the crowd rose to their feet to give the president a standing ovation, all eyes fell upon FLOTUS who took to the occasion with a quiet dignity and subdued style.

Dressed in a black sheer Jason Wu 3/4-sleeve frock, Obama mouthed “I love you” to her husband and held her daughter Malia tightly. The stately midi-length look was certainly a far cry from the exuberant Narciso Rodriguez sheath she initially wore to burst onto the scene in 2008, or even the vibrant prints, delicate florals, and fashion-forward designs that have become Obama’s signature across her term. Nevertheless, the dress fit the solemn mood of the night. That isn’t to suggest there was a lack of hope, though. As FLOTUS smiled up at her husband, he reminded the audience of his wife’s unyielding grace, grit, and style while under fire—qualities we can all aspire to in the coming years.
