Something For Sunday
Some things bear repeating. Maybe that’s what the early church fathers had in mind when Easter Sunday was placed on the calendar once a year. Maybe the Biblical reporters under the guidance of the Holy Spirit felt that this reminder of the goodness of God was necessary for the saints who were going through storms of various kinds. Whatever the reason, it is Resurrection Sunday again.
I am personally grateful for the reminder this year. The possibility of new life heralded not only in the natural but also in the realm of the spiritual, gives reason to hope. Even though nature has not finished with winter in many parts of our United States, the budding of trees, the daffodils in bloom, certain plants that have been seemingly dead taking on newness and Easter Sunday say, yes. Yes, he’s done it again! Hope with its gentile persuasion says we can never give up on God. He is who he says he is and he can do what he says he can do. If we need to hear it over and over again, it bears repeating.
Other things remind us of the goodness of God. A reborn young man from the hood in Los Angeles, can fill the Staple Center with mourners and those who rejoice in his accomplishments. An aside, there might be some things that we do that would possibly be negative in nature and for which others hasten to judge us, but our master teaches: let him who is without sin cast the first stone. In the hood we learned, although some have seemingly forgotten, that those who live in glass houses ought not to throw stones. Can we just not celebrate the good?
Another thing. A forty three year-old golfer who had been counted out and who some sponsors had backed away from perseveres and wins the coveted green Master’s jacket after eleven years of ordeals that would strip many of their tenacity. If you listen closely, you may hear him singing: Don’t count me out just yet.
Obviously, we can go on with other reminders of what is good in a world gone made. A world in which people consistently choose greed over grace. Even those of us who are Easter people, that are children of the cross who have accepted the new life in Jesus Christ, sometimes falter. We too need the reminder that Easter brings each year.
It is Resurrection Sunday Again. Hallelujah! Let us rejoice anew in the glory of the possibility of endless hope provided at Calvary. Even though he died, he didn’t stay dead. Just as he got up, we too will overcome death and be raised to new life. We can face our tomorrow, yea even our today as we live out our faith.
