Changing Our Narrative
Now that the holidays are over and things have started to settle down, I am already thinking about my travel schedule for 2020. My Christmas and NYE were very low key. I really wanted to be on a beach, but I waited too long to start planning and that meant prices were out of control. I was having a conversation with my sister, Kaya, early on NYE and we both vowed that we will start planning early and that this time next year we would be on vacation. So, as I write this, I know that my Christmas and NYE 2020 needs to be planned and paid for by June 2020.
There are a few different ways I prefer to travel: sometimes I travel alone (quality time with myself), and sometimes I travel with friends (usually staying at a hotel or renting a house). There are benefits to both but be very cautious when traveling with friends, especially if you decide to rent a house. Friends don’t always make good travel companions, so be very cautious because it’s your money and time and the worst thing is to go on vacation with friends and not have a great time.
One of my favorite places to visit is Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (PVR). I try to spend time there at least two times a year. If you live on the west coast, the flights are shorter and less expensive than flying from the east coast, so- for all my east coast readers- make sure to plan well in advance if you plan to head there. I’ve been to PVR during the high season (from around October to after Easter) and low season (Easter to around October). Honestly, I like visiting during both seasons. Some of my favorite things about PVR are the cobblestone streets, the friendliness and warmth of the local people, the good nightlife, the nice beaches, the great food, and the fact that PVR still feels and looks like Mexico. I hate traveling out the country and feeling like I never left the States.
Whenever I travel to PVR, I always stay in a house. The houses usually come with a staff (cooking and cleaning), a pool and hot tub, and great views (especially if you stay on the hills). If you are considering a vacation with friends and you want to rent a house, here are a few guidelines that I have used:
- Start planning early. Select a house that is central to the beach and the city. I usually like to do no more than a 10-15min cab ride.
2. Make sure you select the right people; everyone must get along.
3. Figure out the cost (including food and tip for the staff) and set up a payment timeline. Collect food and tip money no later than the first day of vacation.
4. Do one reminder for payment. We are all adults and you should not have to constantly remind people to pay for a trip that they committed to.
5. Once travel is booked, make sure that you collect travel info. This is needed for the house manager and also if you are planning a welcome party.
6. Collect dietary restrictions and special requests for food and beverages. You will need to get this information to the house manger one to two weeks before arrival.
7. Make sure everyone is aware of the house rules.
8. Do not over plan. My friends and I do breakfast and dinner together and leave the hours in between unscheduled. People need down time away from the group.
9. If you are not familiar with converting US dollars to pesos, there is an app, Dollars to Pesos you can download to help with converting.
10. Have everyone download Whatsapp. It is the best way to communicate, especially when you are traveling out the country. WhatsApp is free and offers simple, secure, reliable messaging and calling, available on phones all over the world.
Make sure you research and look for the best deals. Not all vacations need to be expensive or extravagant, but they all need to be relaxing and enjoyable. As I have matured, my vacation time is very important and needed. We all need time to get away and disconnect to enjoy life!
I hope that your 2020 is full happy great vacations that turn into great memories!! Happy New Year!
