Soul Food, America’s Original Food

“I am the king of Soul Food” proclaimed Adolf Dulan, founder of Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen. Dulan credits his mother with teaching him how to cook. “I was raised in a log cabin in Oklahoma with my mother and four other brothers and sisters and I would have to help my mother cook. I didn’t like to help her cook because I couldn’t get out and play and especially when the preacher was coming to Sunday dinner because all the children had to eat last.  We had food to eat but the fact that you had to help cook it and then be the last one to eat was just too much for me.”  Adolf Dulan, Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen

“It appears to me that the White man does not honor Soul Food as American food. When you go to other countries, Italy, Germany, and you want German food, its recognized as German food but when you come to the United States and you say ‘I want some American food,’ they don’t steer you toward Black owned and operated restaurants, they tell you that French Fries, Hamburgers and Hot Dogs is American food. We know those foods came from France and Germany.  But when we talk about Soul Food, (American Food)I’m talking about the food that was cooked by Black mothers,  Black grandmothers that started out with a lot of pork, corn and wild vegetables.
