They say knowledge is power, and freedom, and that it is what sets you apart. For much of my life I saw school as exactly that, something to complete, a requirement to check off before stepping into the world. But over time, my mindset shifted, and that shift changed everything.

I went from dreading school, even as a strong student to realizing that true growth requires mastery. Not perfection, but commitment. Not knowing everything, but being willing to learn. I don’t claim to be a master of anything, but I have committed myself to the journey.

Nearly six years after earning my undergraduate degree, I decided to deepen my understanding of the sports industry and take the next step. On December 13, 2025, I completed my master’s degree in Sports Administration. That experience taught me more than I expected.

Stepping away from school for a season brings both benefits and challenges. It also reminded me that for many people, earning a graduate degree represents more than a title, it reflects sacrifice, financial investment, discipline, and the courage to pursue something many dream about but never attempt. Most importantly, it taught me that there is always more to learn when you remain open to growth.

I encourage anyone reading this piece to explore opportunities for development. Don’t shy away from the next step. You will be proud of yourself for accomplishing something that others aspire to but never pursue. Higher education can be a steppingstone that positions you for new heights in your career and your calling.

“The ten months I spent in my master’s program became the most rewarding academic experience of my life. Don’t place a ceiling on yourself. Trust God with what you cannot control, and be willing to sacrifice so you can reap the benefits of growth and evolution.” Elijah Gaines, Senior Contributor, Reel Urban News.

Take it from someone who once disliked school. I thought it demanded too much time and required learning things I would never use. Yet the ten months I spent in my master’s program became the most rewarding academic experience of my life. Don’t place a ceiling on yourself. Trust God with what you cannot control, and be willing to sacrifice so you can reap the benefits of growth and evolution.
